| 9 | ![]() | NOTES: This print is well described in "The Month at Goodspeed's" (Vol. X, No. 3) Boston, December, 1938, pages 75-78. See the attached multimedia file. The Great Ocean Race between the Henrietta, Fleetwing and Vesta was sailed in December, 1866. NOTES: The race was conceived by George Osgood, his brother and Pierre Lorillard during a alcohol-fueled dinner at the Union Club in New York. While discussing the performance of their respective schooners (Fleetwing and Vesta) they began exchanging insults and challenges and when they stumbled out of the club early the next morning the men had agreed to race across the north Atlantic (Sandy Hook to the Needles) in December. When James Gordon Bennett Jr. heard about the race he asked if he could participate. Each owner put up $30,000 and the winner would take all. As you would expect the weather was horrifying. Fleetwing, which had taken a more southerly route, lost six men overboard when a wave swept the deck during a gale.Amazingly, the yachts remained close throughout the race. Bennett’s yacht Henrietta finished first in just under 13 days, 22 hours. Fleetwing followed by Vesta finished the following day crossing the line just 40 minutes apart. The race started the world’s oldest transatlantic ocean race. In 2019 a fleet of 13 raced across the North Atlantic Ocean from late June to early July in the 31st running of the classic yacht race. | CL18651 | |||||||
